Prestbury Village Lawn Tennis Club
COURT CIRCULAR
August 2007
CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
Welcome to all our new members who have joined this year. 2007 will be noted for being the ‘summer that never happened’ but despite that, over 130 new players have taken advantage of our excellent facilities, tennis programmes and most usefully our all-weather Astroturf courts. Hopefully for the remainder of the year the weather will continue to improve and we can all enjoy some tennis. Don’t forget senior club nights on Wednesdays and Fridays are still going strong
and are a great way particularly for new members to play some relaxed and easy fun tennis.Since the last newsletter the Development Sub Committee have continued to progress proposals for the shale court resurfacing. The plans presented to the general committee include the specification of a multi-coloured Astroturf playing surface, floodlighting and upgrading the lights on courts 1, 2 and 3 but with recommendation to treat the scheme in two stages. Phase1 would resurface the shale courts and upgrade the lights on courts 1, 2 and 3, the final phase would be to add new floodlighting to courts 4, 5, 6.
Financing the scheme is viable through a mixture of grants and interest-free loans repayable over 10 years from the LTA, with remainder funded from the club’s own resources. The General Committee have authorised the Development Sub Committee to make applications for LTA funding and for planning permission to be sought.

Chairman
HANDICAP TOURNAMENT
The Club Championships have now been completed, the Family Cup is well under way but there is still time to enter the final tournament of the season, the ever popular Club Handicap. Players are allocated handicaps such that all matches should be (and usually are) fairly close. Anyone of any standard should be able to enter and compete on equal terms and, above all, enjoy the tennis. There are five events, men’s and ladies’ singles, men’s and ladies’ doubles and mixed. Partners for the doubles events are drawn. The tournament starts on September 1st and runs through to the end of the month, with Finals day on Sunday September 30th, also the date for the final of the Family Cup. The entry fee is £5, irrespective of the number of events entered.
An entry form is enclosed with this newsletter, closing date August 23rd.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
There was an excellent turnout of spectators and a great atmosphere at this year’s Club Championship Finals day held in early July. The main attraction was a Men’s Singles final clash between former UK top ten player and Cheshire captain Nick Baglin and Club Coach James Griffiths. Nick squeezed through in two close sets to lift the trophy he previously won back in 1990 as a teenager.
If Nick and James held centre stage, the Christiansen family took most of the other starring parts. Fifteen-year-old Isobel beat mum Wendy in the Ladies singles final. They then joined forces in the Ladies Doubles to defeat holders Shirley Osbaldeston and Jude Durrant, the final set being held over until the following Wednesday as the second cloudburst of the day brought proceedings to a close.
Wendy also featured in the Mixed Doubles final, partnering Pete Moran, but once again lost out to one of her talented offspring. Seventeen-year-old William and Ladies captain Jennifer Jackson came through, again in three sets.
William Christiansen and his partner Tom Sinton retained their Men’s Doubles trophy against surprise finalists Anthony Oldham and Laurence Newman. The result might have been different if rain had not intervened. The holders were second best in the first set on the shale courts but, after an hour’s interval, the match had to be completed on the astro courts and Tom and Will cruised to victory.
Both Plate finals werecompetitive affairs. Alison Cartmell made it a hat trick, winning the Ladies Plate for the third year in succession against Alison Scott, whilst new member Jon Lord came through against Rob Forster in the men’s event.
Thanks go to all members of the tournament committee for their help on the day and also to those who volunteered forumpire duty.
Particular thanks go to Peter Moyes who organised Finals Day and Chris Gerrard for superb teas, this year with strawberries and cream.

LOST PROPERTYThere's a mountain of lost clothing in a laundry basket in the kitchen - mostly children's. Please come and look through it because things not claimed in the next few weeks will have to go to the charity shop.
We’ll try to return anything with nametags to the owners
.WINTER BOX LEAGUES
Look out on the noticeboard for the sheets to enter the winter box leagues.
This is a good way of keeping up with some competitive, though friendly, play through the winter. But you do need to make an effort to play the matches
TABLE TENNIS
The club enters two teams in the Wilmslow table tennis league.
Matches run over the winter from September to April and are held on weekday evenings.
If you are interested in being considered for the teams please contact Richard Atkinson (tel: 01625-572581, e-mail: rwa@smithylanefarm.

This facility seldom, if ever, used for its true purpose, has now been cleared and has the key in the door, so can be used easily – conveniently even! This may be useful, particularly when there is some activity in the Clubhouse.
